Resolution: How Many Pixels Are We Talking?
Resolution describes how many pixels — tiny colored dots — a screen uses to build the picture. More pixels generally means sharper detail, especially on larger screens where you sit closer.
The most common resolutions you'll see on spec sheets today:
- Full HD (1080p): 1920 × 1080 pixels — still widely available and perfectly sharp on screens up to about 43 inches at normal viewing distances.
- 4K / Ultra HD: 3840 × 2160 pixels — four times the pixels of 1080p. The clarity difference becomes visible on screens 55 inches and above, or if you sit closer than roughly 7–8 feet.
- 8K: 7680 × 4320 pixels — largely a future-facing spec for now, since native 8K content is extremely limited.

Refresh Rate: Why Motion Smoothness Matters
Refresh rate is measured in hertz (Hz) and tells you how many times per second the screen redraws the image. A 60Hz TV updates 60 times per second; a 120Hz TV updates twice as often.
In practice, the difference matters most in these situations:
- Sports viewing: Fast panning shots and quick player movements appear less blurry on a 120Hz panel.
- Gaming: A higher refresh rate reduces motion blur and — when paired with low input lag — makes gameplay feel more responsive. Most current gaming consoles output up to 120 frames per second on supported titles.
- Standard TV and film: Movies are traditionally shot at 24 frames per second; standard broadcast at 30fps. At these frame rates, 60Hz and 120Hz panels are largely indistinguishable.
Watch out for motion smoothing (sometimes called soap opera effect) — a processing feature that artificially interpolates extra frames. Many viewers find it makes film content look unnatural. It can typically be disabled in picture settings.

Panel Types: The Technology Behind the Picture

Marketing Names vs. Technical Reality
LED/LCD
The most widely available type. An LED backlight illuminates a liquid crystal display layer. Picture quality varies significantly based on whether the TV uses full-array local dimming (backlights in a grid behind the whole screen) or edge-lit backlighting (lights only around the frame). Full-array tends to produce better contrast.
Mini-LED
A refinement of LED/LCD using thousands of smaller LEDs for more precise local dimming zones. This narrows the contrast gap with OLED while maintaining high peak brightness.
OLED
Each pixel emits its own light and can switch off entirely, producing absolute black and near-infinite contrast. OLED panels also offer wide viewing angles. The trade-off is lower peak brightness compared to the brightest LED sets, and a potential for image retention with static content displayed for very long periods.

HDR, Color, and the Supporting Specs Worth Knowing
A few additional specs round out the picture quality story:
- HDR (High Dynamic Range): Expands the range of brightness and color the TV can display. Common formats include HDR10 (an open standard), Dolby Vision (a dynamic, scene-by-scene format that requires licensing), and HLG (used for broadcast). A TV that supports multiple formats has broader content compatibility.
- Color gamut: Expressed as a percentage of a color space (e.g., DCI-P3). A wider color gamut means the TV can reproduce more saturated, lifelike colors.
- Nits (brightness): One nit equals one candela per square meter. Brighter TVs (measured in nits) perform better in well-lit rooms and can make HDR highlights more impactful.
These specs don't exist in isolation. A well-optimized TV with strong local dimming and good HDR tone mapping can outperform a higher-spec rival that processes image data poorly.
